The 17th Annual Doyle Boil will take place at Pineyweeds in Slocum, TX on March 29, 2025, where we'll be serving hundreds of pounds of crawfish & hosting four amazing bands for your live music entertainment. Join us for our huge raffle with door prizes, the always-popular cornhole tournament, food truck service before & after the crawfish boil, & much more! Who Was Doyle "Papaw" Marshall?
Doyle Talmadge Marshall was one of the kindest, most generous people ever put on this earth, but that didn't mean that his red hair didn't bring with it a tough streak - just tell him he couldn't do something, or mention that the polio that struck him as a child rendered him a "cripple" & you would see the heart of a lion. He did more than any able bodied, two legged worker could do in all the pineywoods, in part because he had a point to prove, & also because he knew he was the best at what he did, & people depended on him. He was a hero to many, & an inspiration - once you got to know him, which didn't take long, you completely forgot he was on crutches.
Born January 9, 1914, Doyle Marshall's generous spirit touched countless lives until September 21, 1992, when, at age 78, he passed away in Anderson County, Texas. True to his character, he was at his post behind the cash register at Marshall General Merchandise in Denson Springs when he fell ill & had to be taken to the hospital, leaving an immense void in the hearts of all who knew him. Anyone who visited the store knew Papaw by his seven signature items: his spectacles, his watch, a long-sleeved collared shirt, blue & white pin striped bib overalls, two sturdy wooden crutches, & one shoe. But those who knew him best would tell you there were actually nine things he always wore—you couldn't miss his gracious heart worn proudly on his sleeve & that welcoming smile on his face.
His love for life ran deep & wide. He cared dearly for his family, his community, customers, & visitors alike. His passions included God, plumbing/construction, raising cattle, & listening to the Statler Brothers singing through the small speakers of the stereo he kept next to his cash register. As one of the first licensed plumbers in Texas after the Texas Board of Plumbing Examiners was created in 1947, he took immense pride in his craft—a legacy we honor today with the two pipe wrenches in our logo.
At his side through it all was his beloved wife Margaret, known affectionately as "Mamaw" to most. She could usually be found in the kitchen, caring for his work crews from his construction days, or watching over the legions of children that he & Mamaw delighted with candy & cokes from the shelves of the store. Together, they created a place that was more than just a business—it was the heart of their community.
He built his life around service to others, whether through his craft, his store, or his boundless generosity. His graciousness & goodwill became legendary throughout the area. Today, his legacy lives on not just in the memories of those who knew him, but in every scholarship recipient who embodies his spirit of kindness, compassion, determination, & service to others.
